Chloe Moretz Eyes Sils Maria

Chloe Moretz is the latest name said to be in talks to join the cast of Olivier Assayas' (Summer Hours) latest, Sils Maria. Deadline reports that she'd join Juliette Binoche and Mia Wasikowska in the Swiss-set drama.

The film, picked up by IFC yesterday, is said to examine middle age. Moretz would play Joann, a young actress who signs on to play a role that made Binoche's character famous when she herself was young.

Moretz's next project to hit the big screen, Kimberly Peirce's Carrie serves as a real-world mirror of exactly that. The young actress will step into the role played by Sissy Spacek in Brian De Palma's 1976 adaptation.

Gus Van Sant Eager To Direct FIFTY SHADES OF GREY; Shoots Steamy Sex Scene Featuring Alex Pettyfer

Director Gus Van Sant is apparently so eager to win the bid to direct the big screen adaptation of E.L. James’ erotic romance novel Fifty Shades of Grey, that he didn’t wait for Universal Pictures and Focus Features to ask him to shoot a test reel.  James’ novel centers around Anastasia Steele and her introduction to a whole new world of sexual discovery and risqué activities in the hands of billionaire Christian Grey, and the feature film adaptation of the book has been a subject of high interest.

Van Sant, who’s best known for directing the Academy Award-winning Good Will Hunting and the biographical drama Milk, reportedly shot a steamy sex scene featuring Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike) in an attempt to showcase his vision for the would-be film.  Hit the jump for more.

’21 Jump Street’ Sequel: Original Directors Returning, Story Details and More

A sequel to 21 Jump Street entered development before the first movie opened in theaters, back when many a person (well, save for Screen Rant‘s Kofi Outlaw) was skeptical about a quirky buddy action-comedy based on a outdated 1980s TV series and pairing Channing Tatum with Jonah Hill. How things have changed, now that 21 Jump Street is regarded by many to be The Surprise Hit of 2012.

We found out last week that Sony will released the 21 Jump Street sequel (official title TBD) in theaters by 2014; today, we have an update that includes a more specific time frame for the theatrical release, in addition to details about who is directing, the story and returning cast members (as well as the potential for many a new face).

More Buyers Look for Smart TVs

Netflix, LoveFilm and connected web video players are behind the drive, according to a new survey.
The rise of smart TVs, second screen usage in homes and confusion over what is and isn't piracy provided food for thought for the industry in a report set to be published Wednesday.

Research findings of 2,500 consumers published by U.K. legal eagles Wiggin, whose clients include the British outposts of Hollywood studios, indicate that smart TVs – those connected to the internet – are being plugged in more and more.

According to the Wiggin's Digital Entertainment Survey 2013, Smart TVs offering apps and media content via an internet connection to the set are owned by 23 percent of those surveyed, up from 21 percent last year. And a further 37 percent "expressed interest in purchasing one in the near future," the report says.

Kevin Feige Confirms the Rights to DAREDEVIL Have Reverted Back to Marvel

It appears that Marvel Studios has secured the rights to another very popular comics character.  While 20th Century Fox’s 2003 take on Daredevil was a bit of a misfire, the studio had been trying to move forward on a new iteration of the character in recent years.  30 Days of Night director David Slade came onboard to direct a Daredevil reboot in the spring of 2011, and Fringe scribe Brad Caleb Kane was subsequently tapped to pen the screenplay.  Movement on the project was quiet for a full year, though, and the following summer Slade left the film to helm the pilot for NBC’s Hannibal.

When Slade exited the project, however, Fox was facing a ticking clock.  The studio had to move quickly to get a new Daredevil movie into production before the rights to the character reverted back to Marvel.  Well, a new Daredevil film failed to materialize in the ensuing months, and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed today that Marvel now holds to the rights to the character.  Hit the jump for more.

‘Iron Man 3′ Special IMAX Poster Revealed; Kevin Feige Discusses Tony’s Trauma

Marvel executive Kevin Feige has worked as a producer on just about every Marvel Studios movie released in the 21st century, and is effectively the spider at the centre of the Marvel movie web. He is in charge of keeping continuity in line across all of the films that take place in the same universe, including Thor, Captain America, The Avengers, Iron Man, and the respective sequels to all of those, along with future releases Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man.

Therefore, while Shane Black and Drew Pearce put together the screenplay for Iron Man 3, and Black directed the film, Kevin Feige is tasked with overseeing Tony’s cross-franchise character arc – a subject he has opened up about in some recent press interviews.

Thailand Bans Local Documentary ‘Boundary’

The Thai government says director Nontawat Numbenchapol’s film, which premiered at the 2012 Berlinale, is "a threat to national security and international relations.”
Thai director Nontawat Numbenchapol’s independent documentary Boundary appears to have pushed one.
The Thai government announced a countrywide ban on the film Tuesday, saying its content is "a threat to national security and international relations.”

A modestly budgeted art-house doc, Boundary premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February. The film begins with footage of the so-called “red shirt” political protests that paralyzed Bangkok in 2011 and resulted in an armed standoff and the deaths of nearly 100 people. Nontawat then zeros in on one of the soldiers involved in the dispute and follows him to his hometown along the Thailand-Cambodia border, an area that has long been the focus of an occasionally violent border dispute between the two countries.

Stallone Updates ‘Expendables 3′ Director Search: No to Mel Gibson or John Woo

The search is on to find a director for The Expendables 3, now that the nostalgic franchise’s mastermind, Sylvester Stallone, has finished a script that is tailor-fit to incorporate new “old blood” (Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes) and new “new blood” in the forms of a young tech-wizard – thinks the Expendables equivalent of ‘Q’ in Skyfall – and a tough woman who brings more than sex appeal to the table.

Sly has yet to announce who will sit in the director’s chair on the third Expendables installment, but has gone ahead and closed the door on two names that fans have been championing; that includes, sadly, the heavily-buzzed about candidate who joined the conversation just two weeks ago.

'Before Midnight': Ethan Hawke, Richard Linklater Tease a Fourth Movie

Reuniting at the Tribeca Film Festival, the actor and director along with Julie Delpy discuss the continuing saga of Jesse and Celine.

Fans of Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, Richard Linklater's films co-starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy as star-crossed lovers, will certainly be riveted by the director's latest installment, Before Midnight, which delivers the same talky romance as the first two movies but with a giant -- and brutal -- helping of marital discord.
Although the trouble-in-paradise plotline exposes cracks within the facade of a seemingly perfect union of two soulmates, Jesse and Celine, Delpy -- who co-wrote the film along with Hawke and Linklater -- says she's not worried about alienating Before devotees.

"This one is romantic too but in a different sort of way," said the actress on Wednesday, joining Hawke and Linklater at a panel ahead of a Before Midnight screening at the Tribeca Film Festival.

‘Fast & Furious 7′: James Wan Confirmed to Direct; Dwayne Johnson Will Return

Once it had been confirmed that Fast & Furious 6 wouldn’t shoot back-to-back with the seventh installment, the natural assumption was that Fast & Furious 7 wouldn’t release in theaters until 2015 (at the earliest). That changed this month, after Vin Diesel dropped the news that filming on the seventh movie begins this summer, followed two weeks later by Universal’s formal announcement of a July 2014 release date target.

Fast and the Furious producer Neal H. Moritz is out and about promoting the sixth installment right now, which has provided him the chance to clear up a few things about the seventh movie; that includes who is directing – now that Justin Lin (Fast and the Furious 3-6) has stepped aside – and whether or not Dwayne Johnson will make an appearance as Agent Luke Hobbs.
