Little Children's Todd Field Will Next Adapt Jess Walter's Romance Novel Beautiful Ruins

The joy of most novels is in the trip the author takes the reader’s imagination on, allowing a string of words to substitute for locations and emotions, pulling characters from one writer’s mind into everyone else’s. Assuming it’s a good novel, of course. And even though Jess Walter’s years-spanning romance Beautiful Ruins hasn’t been out all that long, it has gotten overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics everywhere. So that means it will never get a cinematic adaptation, right? Of course not!

Thanks to Coming Soon, we now know that Todd Field will be making Beautiful Ruins his next feature, teaming up with Cross Creek Pictures co-founders Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson. Smuggler Films, run by Patrick Milling Smith and Brian Carmody, will also be producing. Field, the screenwriter for all of his past features, will be co-scripting with Walter himself.

Clint Eastwood's Stompin' Tom Connors Biopic Is April Fool's Joke

Top Canadian media fell for the online prank that had the "Mystic River" director behind a movie about the late cowboy troubador.

No, Clint Eastwood will not be directing an Australian actor as the late Canadian cowboy troubador Stompin' Tom Connors in the reported biopic The Ballad of Stompin' Tom.
But the project did make a good April Fool’s prank that ensnared top Canadian newspapers this week like the Vancouver Sun and the Global and Mail and Huffington Post Canada.

News of the Eastwood-directed biopic first surfaced on the Broadway World website on April 1, and indicated Aussie actor Bryan Brown would star as Connors, and Shania Twain as his wife.

First Images from ’300: Rise of an Empire’ – David vs. Goliath on the Seas

Zack Snyder’s 300 – based on the comic book of the same name by Frank Miller (The Dark Knight Returns) - was one of the more surprising successes of 2006, particularly as a (relatively) hard R comic book action film. It was so successful, in fact, that a follow-up film was bound to come down the pike at some point.

Neither a prequel nor a sequel, 300: Rise of an Empire will take place more or less concurrently with the events of 300. Today, the first official images from the film have been released. Plus, director Noam Murro and star Sullivan Stapleton (Gangster Squad) talk about what we can expect from the film and how it’ll differ from its cinematic predecessor.

Tribeca Film to Release Six Films in U.K.

Six hand-picked movies including "Greetings From Tim Buckley" will roll out in U.K. across multi-platforms including pay-TV cable operator Virgin Media from April 16.

Tribeca Film, the distribution label of Tribeca Enterprises, has inked a deal to push output into the U.K. with six hand-picked titles available on demand from April 16, 2013.
Two of the six titles will be made available on a day and date basis with their scheduled U.S. rollout with music biopic Greetings From Tim Buckley and horror comedy Fresh Meat chosen.

Starring Penn Badgley and British star Imogen Poots, Buckley is directed by Daniel Algrant, written by David Brendel, Emma Sheanshang and Algrant and explores the story of Jeff Buckley and his father Tim's musical legacy.

Skins' Kaya Scodelario Joins The Maze Runner Adaptation

It’s been at least a few hours since we’ve talked about something to do with an adaptation of a young adult novel, so what better time than now to reengage in that never-ending conversation. The adaptation of choice in this case is director Wes Ball’s upcoming debut feature, The Maze Runner, which doesn’t sound like the absolute worst idea in the world for a feature, but it could just be my affinity for mazes.

Since traditional news media is so yesterday, news of actress Kaya Scodelario joining the cast of The Maze Runner came courtesy of Wes Ball’s Twitter feed, in which he jokingly dropped his casting infobomb.

Rumor Patrol: ‘Evil Dead’ Remake Director in Talks for ‘Doctor Strange’ Movie?

Previously known only for the short film Panic Attack!, Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez burst onto the international stage in a big way last weekend with the gruesome remake of the horror classic Evil Dead. While the film received mixed reviews from critics (read our review), Evil Dead defied expectations by handily leading box office sales on its opening weekend.

Evil Dead‘s success puts Alvarez in the enviable position of a first-time feature director whose talents are in high demand. Many are wondering what project he will choose next – and the answer may be more surprising than anyone could have guessed. A currently-unconfirmed rumor states that Alvarez is in talks to write and/or direct none other than Marvel’s Doctor Strange.

‘Django Unchained’ to Open in China With Less Vivid Blood

Director Quentin Tarantino made what a Sony executive calls "slight adjustments" in the form of smaller splashes of duller-colored blood for the rollout in the country later this week.

Django Unchained will open in China in its full-length gory glory – but the vibrant hue and explosive splatter of the film's bloodshed will be slightly muted for Chinese cinemas, according to the film’s mainland Chinese distributors.
Speaking to Southern Metropolis Daily, Zhang Miao, director of Sony Pictures’ Chinese branch, said director Quentin Tarantino has “agreed on making slight adjustments to the film for different markets – and this adjustment for him is progress rather than a compromise.”
